For most of the quilts I make, I usually choose to leave them unbound with unusual shapes. I do this for a couple of reasons. First of all, because many of my quilts are not utilitarian, I don’t think it is necessary. The second reason is that I enjoy having all three layers of my quilt visible to the viewer for conceptual and aesthetic reasons.

When I know I am makeing a quilt that someone can use, I generally use traditional binding methods. Choosing to bind your quilt does not mean it needs to be perfectly square or that the binding needs to be uniform.

If it feels appropriate for your quilt, consider making it an unusual shape or using something unique for the binding like tassles. The options are limitless!
